The ‘Backstage’ building is an extension of The Old Vic with its own identity, a thriving community-focused social and creative hub integrated with the historic theatre. Over six-floors, this new civic resource comprises a Clore Learning Centre, Writer’s Room, new green room for staff, a flexible studio, an event space with roof terrace and a café-workspace with a play library for young and local people.

The new building is the only opportunity for The Old Vic to expand the footprint of the Grade II* listed site, address issues of capacity and enshrine its’ social mission within the actual building.

We are providing project management services on the scheme, which has now commenced on site, following an enabling project to remodel the existing back of house spaces to improve accessibility and house a new studio space, which completed in the summer of 2023.

Designed by Haworth Tompkins, the new building is intended to be a welcoming destination for the local community as well as an expansion of the theatre’s working and engagement spaces. It will include a triple height café and script library alongside space for education and participation activities.

The  building is designed to be an exemplar low-carbon building, and is aiming to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.
