London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine redevelopment completes
Works have now completed for the redevelopment of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine’s (LSHTM) Keppel Street campus in Bloomsbury. Having undertaken the first phase of the renovation in 2019, Equals again provided cost management services for phase 2 of the project.
The main works included the redevelopment of the central and west wings of the second floor of the Grade II listed building to provide state of the art laboratories and write-up space for 80 students. Further office and lab preparation facilities were created to support the teaching facilities and staff.
A significant element of the scheme was a major overhaul of the building’s central infrastructure. This included the installation of chillers, boilers, water storage plant, mains and LV electricity distribution and formation of new electrical risers. These works play a key part within LSHTM’s refurbishment masterplan, and will be instrumental in facilitating future refurbishments throughout the building.
Additional works were also undertaken to enclose office space within the north courtyard and to provide staff shower facilities.
Significant challenges were posed working within a listed and operational building and were overcome through the combined efforts of the project team, allowing critical research to progress without delay or interruption. The scheme was designed by Ritchie*Studio.
